Using PDFPlates on your iPhone or iPod Touch

One of the nice surprises with PDFPlates was how well it works on Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch. Since a lot of folks already own one of these devices, it is a cheap way to have your plates with you everywhere that you go. The newest iPhones and iPods have 32 GB of storage - and plates for the entire country only require about 3 GB!

PDFPlates on iPhone

The key to viewing plates on your iPhone is the low cost GoodReader application. It costs $4.99, but sometimes you can find it on sale for $0.99 in the iTunes store.

(PDFPlates has no affiliation with these guys, we're just a fan.)

The best way to get the files on to your device is to follow the instructions provided by the folks at GoodReader. You'll have to set your iPhone up as a network folder, but once you do, you can easily transfer the files. Read more here.

Once you have your plates on your iPod, use the GoodReader application to browse the PDFPlates file. One great thing about this application is that it handles these large files VERY well, and you also get bookmark access down to the the level of the approach. So, no hunting and scrolling through the document for the approach you need! Use the 'pinch' method to zoom in, and just touch/drag the screen to pan around the plate. The clarity is amazing.

Bring up the GoodReader Menu by simply tapping the screen.
